The Grand Inquisitor

While this was a great story and told with a rich and descriptive background, its premise was one that many writers have tried to convey over the course of the modern man; if there is a god. Dostoyevsky uses a contrasting duo of main characters to show how it is a paradoxal thought that truly lies within each individual. Ivan seems to be the more philosophical of the two and while Alyosha is a man of the faith, arises many questions in which Ivan has a witty, questioning answer. God will always be a controversial topic and this story further proves how when and if a biblical miracle will happen just how people can react. The Inquisitor is a prime example, with the murder of his son happening and he feeling no mercy to those who have committed the crime; this in turn is counteracting the way of the God. God applies mercy to those because of the sacrifices Jesus gave. It is not a mortals(regardless of power) place to chose who is to be fit for unearthly reparations. This along with emotional ties to his son he sees this foreign and not acts of the God in which he thought he knew. Thats the thing though until the day that you see him face to face it is nearly impossible to truly know what he wants and how to serve him. This is message i believe Dostoyevsky was trying to get across along with man knows nothing until everything is seen. One can only assume based of what they observe, learn and come to know in their life.
